A collection of meditative journeys through the former Yugoslavia, loosely following the footsteps of travel writer Rebecca West. Consisting of a series of fixed-frame tableaux, the films present seemingly random glimpses of everyday life that at times border on magic realism and the absurd. Removed from the narrow Balkanist gazes and often-told narratives of ancient ethnic hatreds associated with political commentary on the region, the lived landscapes of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the intertwined stories of a hypnotist and a swimmer are central in Frame One.…

Application Process

Locked in a mind-numbing marriage, elderly Alma wants husband Gustav to leave the confines of his ‘safe-space’ bathtub and apply to reach a higher level of existence, known as the Scintillating Intelligence. To do this, Gustav must re-enact memories from his life, that each elicit one of six pure human emotions: pleasantness, unpleasantness, arousal, subduing, stress and relaxation. Only after performing these memories to a mysterious god, known as the Monad, will he find out if he’s reached his goal. But first he must practise; Alma hires an acting coach to help him do just that.…

Careworker Khal leads a life of extremes: at work he’s submissive to his demanding patient, Lawrence; in his spare time, he’s a bombastically aspiring performance poet, giving tips to his young mentee Bilal. But with his relationship with Lawrence under threat, and spurned by the woman he loves, Khal must go to extraordinary lengths to stop his universe from collapsing. This narrative short looks at the nature of control, and how people’s lives are often finely-balanced solar systems that can fall out of kilter at the slightest change of orbit. The aim was also to represent minority characters in a unique and non-stereotypical manner.…
